Velma Cloward Betts, age 92, of Roosevelt, passed away March 3, 2017, at the Uintah Basin Sr. Villa.
She was born March 28, 1924, in Hayden, to Loren and Florence Gurr Cloward. She married Mervin Morrill Betts on August 9, 1945, in Provo. He died February 21, 1998.
In Velma’s early days, she worked for many years with Dr. Mantela as a dental assistant, then for the Ute Tribe Cattle Enterprise, and as a clerk at the Sale Barn where Mervin was the auctioneer. Her favorite thing to do, however, was be a mother and a grandmother, taking care of and spoiling her grandkids! Her pancakes, homemade syrup, and french toast were the BEST! Her yard was always immaculately cared for and beautiful – her “4:00 O’Clock” flowers being her favorite. Holidays were always special occasions and she enjoyed collecting antiques. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served as the ward Librarian for many years – a calling she loved. She ate lunch at McDonald’s almost every day with her best friend Betty Davis.
Velma is survived by her children, Wade (Angela) Betts; Shelly (Daren) Jensen, both of Roosevelt; grandchildren, Lance Betts, Darren Betts, Scott Webb, Brooke Robb, Chasidi (Jesse) Knight, Makenzie (Curt) McBride, Carson Nielson; 11 great-grandchildren; brother and sisters, Shirley (Jim) Palmer, Alpine; Gay (Jim) Bell, American Fork; Dar (Rosie) Cloward, LaVerkin; a great-niece, Jenni James; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin; infant twin boys, an infant child, Cloward Betts; and a sister, Zemona “Zee” Fuell.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Roosevelt 1st Ward LDS Chapel where a viewing will be an hour prior to the services.
Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park under direction of the Hullinger Mortuary. Condolences may be shared at www.hullingermortuary.com
The family would like to express their great appreciation to the awesome people at the Sr. Villa who cared for her, especially in her last hours...they were so kind and compassionate.
