Stella Florence Ames Harmston, age 94, of Roosevelt, passed away on May 11, at the Roosevelt Villa.
Stella was born on April 18, 1922, in Koprzywnica, Poland as Stanislawa Florentyna Zbydniewski, to Woichiech and Marianna Szymalski Zbydniewski.
On December 1, 1923, then almost 2 years old, Stella, with her mother and older brother, Chester Roman Zbydniewski, boarded the S.S. Fredrick V111, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to cross the ocean and arrive in the United States at Ellis Island, New York. This is where they would reunite with her father and begin their new life.
Stella was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She attended a girl's Catholic school with nuns as teachers, and later a millinery college, where she developed her creative talents as a seamstress and hat maker. There, she was commissioned to meet with ladies, study and draw the shape of their face and head, then design, create and deliver their beautiful custom hats, just like the ones we see in old movies.
Through a friend, Stella met James Wayne Ames, a hospitalized Navy Seaman. They were married just 2 weeks later, on March 10, 1944, in Long Island, New York. Stella and Wayne made their home in Ioka, UT, where they had two daughters, Florence and Martha. Stella became a naturalized citizen of the United States on February 21, 1957. She loved her beautiful yards, gardening, creating wonderful crocheted and knitted items, oil painting, bowling, horse riding, fishing and camping. She was very talented and though she was small in stature, she was a mighty woman. Wayne passed away in 1982. Stella married Theodore Roosevelt Harmston, (Ted) in 1986. Ted passed in 1995.
Stella lived a long, healthy, very active, full life and was loved and cherished by all of her family with special attachments to a multitude of loving nieces and nephews.
Stella is survived by her daughters, Florence Buxton, Preston, ID and Martha Jean (Marti) Ames-Bailey, Roosevelt, UT. She has 5-grandchildren, 9-great grandchildren and 9-great great grandchildren.
Stella was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother, husband Wayne, husband Ted, a grandchild baby boy, sons-in-laws, Clair Buxton and Brent Jay Bailey, as well as numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ioka Cemetery.
