Fred Scott Mathews, age 61, of Altonah, chose to return to his Heavenly Father on February 7, 2015.
He was born May 12, 1953, in Roosevelt, to Fred Clair and Carma Arlene Goodrich Mathews. He married Donna Lou Daniels and they divorced after thirty-two years of marriage.
Scott was a kind, gentle soul who was well liked by everyone. He was a hard worker and was the “go-to guy” to fix a sticky situation. He worked as a pusher in the oilfield which is typically an inside desk job, but instead of sitting in the office he was often outside working alongside his crew. He had a good sense of humor and was a big tease. He was patient, honest, always tried to do the right thing, and had an easy-going way of teaching things. Serving and helping others came naturally, and if he said he would do something, it would get done. He had a green thumb, producing some of the best vegetables around, which he enjoyed giving away.
Scott had a soft spot for animals, especially horses which he spent many hours riding in his younger days.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony of the gospel; he paid his tithing faithfully.
Scott’s family was his pride and joy, and he adored his grandkids. He really wasn’t fond of his job, but he did it so that his family was well taken care of – he sacrificed much for them. Family vacations were important to him, and they often consisted of camping and enjoying the outdoors – nothing “grand” but always memorable. One of the favorites was staying at the campground at Lagoon, riding the rides all day, and playing cards late into the night. He spent many hours in the hospital with his daughter, Dana. He was very much loved and will be dearly missed.
As a final act of kindness, he was able to donate his organs to help extend the lives of total strangers – he lives on!
Scott is survived by his children, Dana Lee Mathews, Ogden; Holly Dawn (David) Hamilton, Houston, Texas; Clayton Scott (Elizabeth) Mathews, Roosevelt; Landon C (Amanda) Mathews, Roosevelt; Lindsey Bree Mathews, Lehi; grandchildren: Mason Matthew Herdsman; Camille, Maren, Dallin & Leah Hamilton; Kennedy & Caitlynn Agee; Kayden, Kylee, Collins, Brenon, Jaron, Aiden & Claire Mathews; mother, Carma Mathews, Altamont; brothers and sisters, Linda (Roger) Ames, Altonah; Denise (Kirk) Christensen, Talmage; Kelly (Darlene) Mathews, Payson; Gary (Angie) Mathews, Mt.
