Rose de León Vela, age 75, of Altamont, Utah, passed away January 17, 2024, at her home.
She was born March 1, 1948, in Petronila, Texas, to Candelario de León and Maria Lucresia Aldamas. She married Julio “Buddy” Vela, Jr. On July 25, 1970, in Petronila and they were sealed on August 24, 1978, in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Rose was well known as a hardworker and had a servant’s heart. Besides caring for and loving her family, she raised many other children who called her Momma Rose. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, camping, playing volleyball with Buddy, and traveling the world. She was an excellent shot with a rifle. She was well known for her baking and shared everything with everyone– and everyone always wanted her recipes.
She was very active in the Church, serving in many callings, including president of the Relief Society, Primary, and Young Women’s organizations, and various Stake leadership callings. She and Buddy served two missions, the first in the Missouri St. Louis Mission and then as service missionaries, called to be “Mentor Missionaries.” She was so proud of her two grandsons that are currently serving missions in Guatemala and Brazil.
Rose adored her grandchildren and they fought over being her favorite grandchild. Her fun-loving and adventurous spirit will be greatly missed. She did not hesitate to get on a trampoline, pogo stick, or crazy carnival rides with her grandkids.
