Pauline Mott Brown, 84, of Duchesne Utah, died on January 15th 2015, in Salt Lake City, from injuries sustained in a fall.
Pauline was born on June 2, 1930, in a small log house in Duchesne to Orson Orlando and Romanza Bancroft Mott, and was the youngest of five children. Pauline was very young when the family moved to a farm on the Strawberry River, where she spent her early years. She had fond memories from that time – milking cows, gathering eggs, playing with the farm animals, and riding through the fields on her horse. Her mother, Romanza, died in 1941 when Pauline was just 11 years old. Soon after her death, Orson sold the farm and Pauline moved back to Duchesne to live with her sister, Olive, and her family for the next few years.
While a teenager, Pauline lived in a room in the Duchesne Hotel and worked as a waitress in the restaurant there, supporting herself and going to High School. During that time Jim and Maxine Omps purchased the hotel. Maxine’s brother, Deon Brown, soon joined them to help in the business. It wasn’t long before the cute little red-haired waitress caught his eye, and soon a romance began. Deon & Pauline eloped to Evanston, Wyoming on September 11, 1948 and began nearly 48 years of marriage. They made Duchesne their home and raised their family there. Deon worked at Kohl’s Market and Pauline was often there beside him, as they bought the business and ran it successfully until their retirement. They were very involved in community and civic activities, doing their part to make Duchesne a good place to live.
Upon retiring, they became “snowbirds” and spent their winter months in the St. George area with many life-long friends that were doing the same. They spent several years doing whatever they wanted – mostly just having fun with their friends – and enjoying the beautiful climate and scenery of the southwest. Deon was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away on July 13, 1996, in Duchesne, leaving Pauline alone for the first time in nearly half a century. She was so lonely without him, but took comfort in her large family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Deon & Pauline were sealed together for time and all eternity in the Mount Timpanogos Temple on July 27, 2002.
Pauline was a member of the LDS Church and served in various callings in the Primary and Relief Society. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years. Pauline was known for her beautiful needlework and award-winning needlepoint tapestries, winning the grand prize trophies at both the Duchesne County and Utah State Fairs.
Pauline is survived by her children Eddie (Pam) Brown, Duchesne; Denice Pola, Lehi; Kent Brown, Duchesne; Bret (Terri) Brown, Gilbert AZ; and her sister, Betty Hamblin of Duchesne. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Deon; brothers Boyd and Almy Mott; her sister Olive Belt; and three grandchildren, Kimberly, Brooke, and Lance.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 24th, at 11:00am, at the Duchesne LDS Stake Center located at 901 N 500 E Duchesne. Viewings will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the same location. Interment will be held at Strawberry Cemetery under the direction of the Hullinger Mortuary
