Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather & great-great-grandfather, Niles Junior Earl better known as "June" Earl to many friends and family in Southern Utah, age 89, returned to his Heavenly Home on March 6, 2017 at the Roosevelt Senior Villa.
Dad was born December 7, 1927 in Virgin, Utah to James Niles Earl and Minerva Dalton Earl. He was the 5th of 8 children. He came into this life premature weighing only 4 1/2 pounds and slept in a shoebox by the coal stove to be kept warm. He graduated from Hurricane High School in May of 1946 and on September 26, 1946, at the age of 18, he joined the United States Army. Quoting dad, “I was sent to Fort Douglas, Utah where I stayed a couple of days. I was then put on a train and went to Camp Beal, California. I spent about two weeks there and then went by train to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where I received my basic training. I trained heavily with the M1 and Carbine rifles. I was assigned to the 12th Calvary regiment of the 1st Calvary Division. I trained as an armored car crewman. I served with the famed fighting 1st Cavalry Division which was on occupation duty in the ten prefectures of the Toyko-Yokohama area. From there I went to Camp Stoneman, California, and on January 4, 1947, I boarded a ship and sailed for Japan to help with the occupation and clean-up. I spent a year in Japan, where I was a mechanic in the Motor Pool and worked mostly on military jeeps and transport trucks. While serving there I was promoted to a Corporal 1st Class. I was stationed at Nagai, Japan. In January of 1948, I left Japan and sailed back to the United States”. He was honorably discharged on January 20, 1948.
Dad moved to Duchesne in February 1948 and soon after met his forever sweetheart Norma Louise Grant. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 27, 1950. Together they built a beautiful home and raised their 5 children in Duchesne. In December of 1993 dad and mom sold their home and moved to Roosevelt where they built another beautiful home on 5 acres in the Cove. Dad enjoyed his small herd of pure-bred Angus cows. In September of 2003 they moved to St. George because of the cold basin winters causing him so many health problems. They loved St. George and were very happy there for 13 years.
Dad loved Country and Western Music. He played the guitar and sang. One of the greatest gifts he left his family is recordings of him playing the guitar and singing. Another great gift he left us and anyone who knew him was his honesty, integrity and love for his wife. She was his everything and he took such good care of her. His love for his family showed in everything he did and they always came first. Dad loved to work on his farm(s) in Duchesne and Roosevelt as well as hunt and travel with his family.
He worked for and was part owner of George C. Kohl Co (Kohl’s in Duchesne) for over 33 years. Dad took a mail correspondence course in 1957 for 4 years to become a television repairman. He built his own television set and all his own test equipment. He was the only licensed television repairman in Duchesne and Western Duchesne County. He would travel all over fixing televisions during the evenings and on weekends while still working full time, 6 days a week at Kohl’s. Many times he wouldn’t even charge for his services. He was a member of the Duchesne Chamber of Commerce, and building inspector for a short time. Dad was an active member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many positions including 1st and 2nd Counselor in the Bishopric, Elders Quorum presidency as well as Stake Missionaries and Ward Missionary Leader. He and mom worked in the Provo Utah Temple for a year and the Vernal Utah Temple for 6 years.
Niles is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, 5 children, Grant (Wendy) Earl, Roosevelt, SueAnn Poff, Roosevelt, Connie (Kim) Mullins, Duchesne, Lisa (James) Lisonbee, Roosevelt, Eric Earl, Vernal. 24 grandchildren, 59 Great Grandchildren, and 7 Great-great grandchildren.
