Nick L. Stevenson, age 66, of Altamont, passed away far too early at his home on January 7, 2018. Nick was born on August 12, 1951.
Nick married his high school sweetheart, Ann, in 1970, who he was madly in love with his entire life. As Nick was very fond of saying, his sweetheart Ann “really fixed it up for him.”
Nick spent most of his life on his ranch that he loved so passionately. Nick and his wife Ann, raised their five children on the LC Ranch, and Nick was happiest when he was playing on his ranch, roaming around on his “hoot bug,” building a road for no good reason, touring the ponds that he affectionately called his “frog ponds” to see if any fish were jumping, checking out the animal life, or hanging out in his “play house” where he kept his airplane. Nick loved to live and play on his ranch.
Nick also had a life-long passion for aircraft and flying. Nick flew his first fixed-wing at 16, and was a helicopter pilot by the age of 20. He had many adventures in his three helicopters and two airplanes over the course of his lifetime. Many people enjoyed going for rides in Nick’s helicopter and airplane over the decades.
Nick loved to camp and hunt and spend time in the mountains. He was a life long resident of Altamont, and thought there was no better place to live. Nick has always been a storyteller. He shared many fantastic stories about life in the basin, hunting, mountain men, his pioneer-ancestors’ trek to Utah, and especially the Lost Rhoades Gold Mines. Nick loved to talk to people and would tell his tales to anyone who would listen.
Above everything else, Nick loved his wife, his kids, and his grand children. He enjoyed many family gatherings, surrounded by family, who adored him. Nick’s grand-children loved to jump into Poppa Nick’s hoot bug for rides around the ranch, trips to howl at the moon, and mini-adventures for ice cream at the Bluebell store.
Nick was a loving, caring, and wonderful father and grandfather. He was a character and his daughters and wife cherished every second of his sense of humor, his stories, and one-liners, and his bear hugs. He will be sorely missed!
In Nick’s own words, “good party, no whiskey, me going home.”
Nick is survived by his wife, Ann, his son, Roylee, daughters, Nikki, Tammy, Kathy, and Jeannie. Sons-in-law, Matt Judd, Kory Kapaloski, Ryan Martin, and James Helms. Nick leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Nick is preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Larue Stevenson, a brother, Lamar, a Sister, Ranae, and granddaughter, Jesse.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Altamont LDS Stake Center. Viewings will be held at the church on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m.
