Nancy Lee Nick Martinez, age 82, of Ft. Duchesne, passed away peacefully of natural causes on December 10, 2020, at Shunshine Acres surrounded by her family.
Nancy was born on December 24, 1937, in Ft. Duchesne, Utah, to John and Virginia Brock Nick. She married Nasario Vernal “Jerry” Martinez, on February 9, 1976, and he died September 19, 2000.
Nancy worked as a CNA and as a teacher for Headstart. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking and baking. She liked to travel to Pow Wows and was a Bear Dancer in her younger days. She was also fluent in the traditional Ute language and culture. Nancy liked to text and play on her phone and enjoyed watching her soap operas. Prior to Nasario passing away, he and Nancy really liked doing yard work together, playing bingo, and traveling to Wendover.
She comes from a military family–her brothers and husband served in the armed forces–and she was an active and chartered member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Jerry and Nancy were instrumental in starting the VFW Post 4519 in Ft. Duchesne, and the Ladies Auxillary was chartered on March 26, 1993.
Nancy is survived by her children, Julie Ortiz, Fresno, CA; Tracie Manning, Yellowstone Subdivision; Adam Martinez, Sunshine Acres; and Chanel Manning, Whiterocks; 12 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Evanell Bear, Grantsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nasario, her parents, an infant daughter, Linda Nick; sons, Gerald & Larson Martinez; grandchildren, Nicholas Murray; Les, Otis, & Keanon Manning, and Heaven LaRose; sisters, Alice Clay, LaDean Groves, & Helen White; brothers, Floyd & Otis Nick.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at the Myton Cemetery. There will be visitation until 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 11 (Today). The graveside will be live-streamed at this link.
