Maurine Powell Smith, age 91, completed her earthly journey and passed away peacefully in Farmington, NM on Friday, September 22, 2017.
Maurine was born July 29, 1926 in Bluebell. Both her parents James William Powell and Leah Vivien Ewell lived in the Uintah Basin. Maurine came from a family of 14 children with 4 brothers and 9 sisters.
Maurine was a loving and caring homemaker for her family; in the 1950’s she was a professional seamstress for Singer Sewing Center in Idaho Falls, ID sewing clothing for store display with great precision and fashion. Maurine also became greatly proficient at making home-made chocolate delicacies like chocolate-covered cherries, fondant, chocolate caramels, toffee, and much more. And if you ever tasted her raisin-filled cookies you would think they came from a famous pastry chef. She cooked everything from scratch, canned her own home-grown vegetables, fruits, jams and pie fillings.
She married John Alvin Smith of Roosevelt, on October 10, 1942. They had six children and their family has now grown to 64 including all of their 17 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and now 3 great-great grandchildren . Her husband of 74 years preceded her in death in February, 2017. She is also preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and 9 sisters; her first-born son, John Smith, daughter, MaryLee Gardner, and son,James Ole Smith.
She is survived by 2 of her brothers, Calvin Powell of Bluebell; and William “Bill” Powell of Lehi; her daughters, Marsha Lynn Smith of Texas; Deanna Fay Hadley, Salt Lake City; and Pamela Rae (Greg) Morris of Farmington, NM.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Roosevelt Memorial Park.
