Lyle Burke Eldredge, age 83, of Sandy, Utah, our angel husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, graduated this life on February 13, 2024, in Salt Lake City.
He was born October 2, 1940, to Elmer Crandall "Bumps" and Bliss Oberhansly Eldredge, at his parent's home in Roosevelt. He spent his childhood going to school, riding horses on his grandparents' ranch, playing basketball and climbing the hillsides of Uintah Canyon where the family owned a cabin.
Burke married Dearwyn Gay Bowman on May 21, 1964, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with two children, Michael Burke Eldredge and Jason Bowman Eldredge, and Jason's son, Jayden Burke Eldredge. His family were his biggest fans and his greatest loves.
He graduated from Union High School and went to Dixie College where he continued his love of basketball, playing LDS Church ball and was chosen for the All-Star Team of the All Church Tournament. He served his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the French East Mission and spent most of his time in the South of France. He extended his mission and worked on the first chapel for the church being built on French soil.
Burke worked with his family and then owned Bump's Western Wear, later Eldredge Apparel, a clothing store that was a staple in the 50's through the 80's on Roosevelt's Main Street. In 1985, he became a Funeral Director and in 1986 attended and graduated with top honors from Cypress (CA) College of Mortuary Science. He worked with Hullinger Mortuary for 20 years and was especially involved with the funerals and burials of those of our Native Ute Indian Tribal members, with whom he had a great relationship.
He was civic minded. He served for many years as a volunteer fireman and fire chief for Roosevelt, and with others was able to establish the local ambulance service. He worked as an Emergency Medical Technician and trained others as EMTs.
He was very athletic throughout his life, enjoying softball, tennis, and golf, as well as his beloved basketball. If he wasn't playing ball, he was refereeing for those sports. He played in the Utah Summer Games until only a few years ago and won many gold medals, individually and with his team.
Doing leatherwork was another hobby of his. It would be hard to estimate how many handmade belts and buckles were worn around the Uintah Basin that came from his handiwork.
Burke had a strong testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He served in many church positions including Finance Clerk, High Councilor, and Bishop. He was a people lover and had many valued friends in the church, community, and sports world.
He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Burke is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Dearwyn, of Sandy; his son, Jason; grandson, Jayden; sister Michelle (Bart) Morrill; brother-in-law, Ralph Lloyd; bonus brothers and sisters, Faye Hullinger Crapo Girsberger; David (Elaine) Hullinger; Phillip (Sharon) Hullinger; John (Korinne) Hullinger; Teresa (Harold) Munn; Amelia (Dennis) Garner; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded to heaven by his son, Michael; his parents; his parents-in-law, Marion Bowman & Grace Bowman Hullinger, Hollis Hullinger; sister-in-law, Deanna Bowman Lloyd; brother and wife, Gordon & Deanne Asay Eldredge; step-brother, Gilbert "Gib" (Arake & Alice) Hullinger; and brother-in-law, Hugh Girsberger.
