Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, LeGrand J. Gilbert, age 83, passed away March 25, 2016 at his home after a long battle with cancer.
LeGrand was born September 3, 1932 in Arcadia to Ozza Leandrew and Rose Meranda Gilbert. He grew up with seven brothers and two sisters. He enjoyed sports and was good at baseball and boxing. He went to Salt Lake and fought for the golden gloves. He played football until he was sixteen when his father died suddenly leaving him with his mother, a younger brother, a sister, a farm and a dairy to care for while his other brothers were in the service, at college and on a mission. He graduated from the last class of the old Roosevelt High School.
LeGrand married his school friend and sweet heart, Nancy Beal in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on January 21, 1952 by Apostle Marion G Romney. They were blessed with six sons and one adopted girl. They have been married for sixty four years.
LeGrand was known for his generosity and love in helping others with whatever assistance he could provide.
He was made Bishop of the combined Arcadia and Bridgeland wards at the age of 29. He was given the challenge of raising funds and paying for the new Bridgeland Chapel. He presided over seventeen funerals during this time. He especially enjoyed the teenage kids he taught in Sunday School for over fourteen years. He has served as a counselor in a Bishopric and on the High Counsel. He was a Duchesne County Commissioner, served on the Uintah Basin Telephone Board, and was appointed by the Secretary of the Interior of Washington D.C, to the national board of Bureau of Indian Affairs where he made many friends of other tribes. He was a member of the Farm Bureau delegation to Washington D.C.
LeGrand and Nancy served in the Denver South Mission in 2008-2009. They both served many years in the Vernal Temple.
LeGrand and his brother Howard owned the first tank trucks to pick up the milk for the 105 producers in the Uintah Basin to haul it to Salt Lake, Denver and sometimes to New Mexico. He and his cousins, Rulon Gilbert and Lynn Miller had the first oil trucks to haul oil from the Basin in the early seventies. When the oil slowed down he and his sons had dump trucks and trailers to fill in the gaps. They ran a dairy, range cows and irrigated over 1000 acres with canvas dams and shovels before they were sprinklers and Circles for irrigation.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, five sons, Bryce (Alene), Lynn (Clarice), Dean (Cindie), Thorpe (Lorie), Jason (Randi) and daughter, Lola, 20 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Franklin, (Beckie) and a grandson, Jackson, brothers, Robert, Glen & Lula, Garn & Barbara, Willard, Bryant (Lois), and Larry & Pauline.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bridgeland LDS Chapel. Viewings will be held at the church on Friday from 6 - 8p.m. and Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
