Dr. James Nelson Lemon was born February 12, 1944 in Roosevelt, Utah, the third of ten children, to Madonna Nelson and James Farnsworth Lemon of Ioka, Utah.
He passed peacefully in the presence of his family February 22, 2016 at the young age of 72.
During his childhood he worked hard on the family dairy farm. Jimmy attended Union High School in Roosevelt where was editor of the school paper and graduated class valedictorian in 1962. The summer after high school, he worked at Jacob Lake doing various jobs around the camp. He especially liked working in the kitchen and learned to bake delicious pies, a skill that will be deeply missed. He attended Brigham Young University. He served an LDS mission in Germany for 2.5 years. He met his beautiful wife, Kathleen Jensen at BYU and they danced together on the BYU International Folk Dance Team. He was good at everything he did! He worked very hard to put himself through college. His studies were interrupted when he was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War.
After returning home from Vietnam, Jim and Kathleen were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 24, 1970. Jim finished his studies at BYU, graduating with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. Post graduate work continued with a Doctorate in Dentistry from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. They moved their family to San Francisco where Jim completed a dental internship. They transferred to Dugway, UT where Jim practiced dentistry on the army base.
In 1980, Jim opened a dental practice in Roosevelt and loved working there until his health forced him to retire in August 2014. He was an active member of the Utah and American Dental Associations. He ran his practice like a one man band doing every aspect of the business.
James loved his country and those he served. He served in the US Army 143rd Medical Company Army Reserve unit at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City. On September 9, 2001, he advanced to commander of the unit. He participated in several service missions where the unit would travel to remote areas and perform dental services for those in need. He also participated in coordinating and facilitating dental educational conferences. He retired a Full Bird Colonel.
He loved serving in the LDS Church. He worked in the Vernal Temple for over 10 years. He served as Bishop of the Roosevelt 6th Ward from 1987 to 1992. He loved spending time with family, gardening, canning, cooking, being outdoors, fishing, hiking, attending BYU football and basketball games, reading, music, dancing, movies and traveling.
James is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Kathleen, Son James David Lemon, daughter Emily Martinez, son in law Mario, son Mark Jensen Lemon, daughter-in-law Jessie and 6 grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings and their spouses including: Marcia and Neil White, Loya and Jim Nebeker, Lyle and Glenda Lemon, Neil and Alecia Lemon, Lynn and Susan Lemon, Sheryl and Craig Burton, Peggy Lemon, Deann and Kent Thomason and Jerry and Jodi Lemon.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Madonna Lemon and brother David Lemon.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday February 27, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Roosevelt LDS Stake Center followed by interment at the Roosevelt Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #64 and the Utah Honor Guard.
