Howard Dan Allred, aka Dutch Allred, age 81, of Neola, passed away January 27, 2017, at his home.
He was born to James Wesly and Fern Marie Mitchell Allred on July 31, 1935, at the home of his maternal grandparents in Roosevelt. His parents soon after moved from a Pleasant Valley farm back to Neola where Howard grew up and attended school, except for a short time the family lived in Ogden. He worked the evening shift at a local filling station while in high school and continued full time after graduating Union High School in 1954.
Later that summer he began oil field employment in New Mexico working derricks. Over the years, he would also work as a driller, tool pusher, bit salesman, and finally as an oil field consultant in connection with his brother Aral’s consulting firm. His employment took him to locations in at least 8 US states, Columbia in South America, Nigeria in West Africa, and Libya in North Africa.
Howard was drafted into the army in 1958, and after basic training in advanced chemical warfare operating smoke generators, he served 18 months in Germany – the final 12 assigned to an artillery tank as a jeep driver.
No matter what he was doing, or where he was, his passion for farming and ranching remained.
Howard married Maxine Murphy Ericsson April 5, 1967, and later adopted her son Bryce M. The family made a home in Neola, in Randlett, then Tripoli (Libya), Dry Fork, and finally in Montana before returning to Neola.
Howard is survived by his wife, Maxine, Neola; brothers, Orvis (Barbara - dec), Phoenix, AZ; Aral (Elaine), Logan; and sisters, Elva (Kenniston) Ogden, Salt Lake City; Helen (Norman - dec) Massey, Vernal; Beth (Ray - dec) Brcko - Smith, Bountiful; and Mona (Scott) Nickell, Roosevelt; brother-in-law, Douglas (Beth) Murphy, Vernal; sisters-in-law, Norman (Lee) Mecham, Neola; Kathy (Bill) Thorup, Salt Lake City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Bryce; parents, James and Fern; parents-in-law, Earvin and Nelda Beal Murphy; a sister, Marie (George -dec) Conn, 2 nieces and 6 nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Neola LDS Chapel. There will be a viewing on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Hullinger Mortuary and from 10-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in the Neola Cemetery with Military Honors by the American Legion Post #64.
The family expresses gratitude to the Hospice workers, especially Lynndawn, Shelly, and Channa for service above and beyond.
In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the LDS Missionary Fund or a charity of your choice.
