Gary Conroy Poowegup, Jr., age 67, of Whiterocks, passed away September 4, 2021, at the Utah Valley Regional Hospital.
He was born March 12, 1954, in Roosevelt, to Gary Conroy Poowegup, Sr. and Rose Betty Nish. He married Rose Salcinus, they later divorced. He married Janice Silk, and they later divorced.
Gary worked as a heavy equipment operator for the BIA Roads Department and the Ute Tribe Water Systems. He was a Fish & Game Conservancy Officer, a law enforcement officer for the Ute Tribe, a semi-truck driver for Poowegup Trucking, and as a rancher, farmer, and cowboy. He was on the Ute Tribe Farm Board. He enjoyed riding horses, hunting, fishing, attending rodeos, playing and coaching softball and was a ladies’ man. He had a great sense of humor and was a big jokester, his smile was ever present and he loved to eat!
He participated in the Sundance and was always there to help anyone in need.
Gary is survived by his children, Ryan (Rachell) Poowegup, Ft. Duchesne; Garrie Poowegup, Independence; Ronald DesJarlais, Randlett; Charles Headdress, Ft. Duchesne; Sheryle DesJarlais, Ft. Duchesne; John & Joseph Amillategui, both of Randlett; Yolena (Brian) Sorenson, Vernal; Raelene (Dilly) Havatone, Parker, AZ; Wendell Havatone, Sr., Jerry Havatone, both of Gusher; Kimberly Havatone, Roosevelt; Leandrea Venagas, Phoenix; a brother, JD Poowegup, Heber City; 34 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Dovon & Waylon Poowegup; parents; sister, Athelia Poowegup; brother, Bradley Poowegup; nephews, Charles “Bigg” Reed, Jr. & Richard Pargeets, Jr.; a niece, Celeste Poowegup.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the Whiterocks Community Building. There will be a wake at the community building on Wednesday after 4:00 p.m.
Burial will be in the Red Knoll Cemetery.
