Fern Betts Milligan, age 92, of Roosevelt, passed away June 27, 2016, at the Sr. Villa in Roosevelt.
She was born October 1, 1923 in Roosevelt to Lewis Clarence and Caroline Hill Betts. She was a proud graduate of Alterra High School in 1940.
Fern married James "Jim" Milligan on October 22, 1943 in Tucson, Arizona while he was stationed there in the Army Air Corp. She followed him all over the western United States, picking up jobs at his various duty stations, to support her young family. He died February 16, 2011.
After Jim's discharge from the service they moved back to the Roosevelt area, the community she would call home for 90 of her 92 years. She served her community and country as a member of the Relief Society of the LDS Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 64.
She worked as an Avon consultant for many years while she had young daughters at home, this enabled her be at home when her girls were home from school. Later she worked at the Union High School cafeteria. In 1967 she and Jim opened Jim's Furniture and Supply, where for over 15 years they sold appliances, furniture, and hung drapes in many of the homes in town.
She spent countless days camping and fishing in the Uintas with friends and family, starting family traditions that have already spanned generations. She also learned to water ski and loved spending time with extended family at the lake.
After retirement they traveled all over the world together, visiting the Caribbean, Hawaii, Europe, the Panama Canal, Canada, Alaska and set foot in each of the 50 U.S. States.
She loved spending time with her siblings, their families, and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She stayed very involved in their livesa"attending ball games, dance and tumbling recitals, and motorcycle races on a regular basis. She loved the Utah Jazz, and had a more competitive side than many might believe.
She took great pride in taking care of her yard. She was recognized by the Roosevelt City Beautification Committee twice for her beautiful yard where she worked daily up until her last few days. The only thing that got in the way of her yard work was her weekly Bridge Club where she enjoyed playing a competitive game with her many beloved friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Eva Hoopes and Darrell Glass, Henderson, NV; Barcy and Randy Huber, Roosevelt; and Linda and Bob Schiefelbein, Tacoma, WA; brothers and sisters, Leonard (Joyce) Betts, Salt Lake City; Kenneth (Sylvia) Betts, Eureka, CA; Glenna Murray, Vernal; and Clara Huxford, Roosevelt; 7 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim Milligan, great-grandson, Justin James Hoopes; siblings, Ellen Milligan, Ray Betts, Glenn Betts, Dean Betts, Lucille Haws, and Ralph Betts.
Funeral services held on Friday, July 1, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at the Roosevelt East LDS Stake Center.
