Etta Marie Whiting Mecham, age 94, of Roosevelt, passed away November 5, 2017, at her daughter’s home in Phoenix, Arizona.
She was born February 6, 1923, in Monroe, to Daniel Lester and Lenora Wight Whiting. She married Fay Myler Mecham on December 16, 1946, in Evanston, Wyoming. He died September 16, 1987 and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Etta served in the US Navy during WWII where she was educated in Bronx, New York, to be a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was with the “Navy Waves” and was stationed in Long Beach, California. She was a good mother and a gentle soul who adored her children and grandkids more than anything. She enjoyed gardening, her roses and other flowers, farming with her husband, watching football, basketball, and baseball. She hunted and fished all of her life and was still shooting deer at age 87 and fishing in the Kenai River in Alaska at age 90! She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Vernal Temple. Her selfless, loving, and generous spirit will be deeply missed.
Etta is survived by her children, Hal Mecham, Mark (Patsy) Mecham, both of Roosevelt; Debra (Alan) Walker, Upalco; Alice (Jim) Young, Norwood, CO; Ben (Robin) Mecham; Bly (George) Glines, both of Neola; Nyle (Connie) Mecham, Roosevelt; 32 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Carl Whiting, Kearns. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fay; grandchildren, Fae Marie Webb & Chaz Levi Glines; brothers, Ray, Wayne, Paul, & Hewitt Whiting; and sisters, Irene Nickle, Ellen Monteer, and Mary Oleen.
Graveside services will be at the Mecham Family Cemetery on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at 11:00 a.m, where military honors will be presented by the Roosevelt American Legion. There will be a viewing on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Hullinger Mortuary.
