Elvin Kettle

Elvin Lynn Kettle, age 71 of Ballard, passed away October 29, 2015, at the
University of Utah Hospital from complications of pneumonia.
He was born October 27, 1944, in Ballard, to Marvin Alfred and Dorothy Rebecca
Collins Betts Kettle. He attended Altera and graduated from Union High School. He also attended the Salt Lake Community College. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the New England States. He proselyted and helped in building the Portland Maine LDS chapel. Upon his return, he met Lois Marlene Barney, and they were later married on August 29, 1966, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Elvin worked for Tom and Jim Reidhead at their concrete plant as a truck driver and mechanic for the first years of his marriage and then on November 1, 1977, purchased what became K&K Sanitation with his brother, Mark. He always appreciated the community supporting them in their business. His life's dream was to always have his family near which he was able to do by teaching them the business and working together on their farm. He loved working the land and watching the crops grow. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife and working side by side with his children and grandchildren. He was a "home- body" and wouldn't leave the area for more than a few days at a time, unless it was with his family. He loved camping and hunting especially in the Book Cliffs. He made sure everyone was taken care of before himself. He was a big tease but always knew when to quit. He was well known for his firm handshake, great smile, and a friend to everyone.
Elvin was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in various callings, including Bishop, Vernal Temple worker, High Councelor, High Priest Group Leader, Elder's Quorum President, Young Men's President, Scout Leader, and missionary with Marlene in the Bishop's Storehouse.
On November 17, 2014, he was involved in a work related accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. He spent eight weeks in intensive care and five months in Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado. He and his wife returned home to Ballard on June 3, 2015 where they were able to spend the remaining months of his life actively involved in their children and grandchildren's lives. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marlene Kettle; his children; Deborah (Clark) Emery, David (Karalee) Kettle, Brett (Deni) Kettle, all of Ballard; 12 grandchildren: 5 great-grandchildren; his siblings; Don (Nancy) Kettle of Midvale; Mark (Mary) Kettle, Renee (Stanley, Jr.) Womack, both of Ballard; with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at the
Ballard LDS Chapel. There will be a viewing on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Hullinger
Mortuary and from 12-12:45 p.m. on Friday at the church.
Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park.
