On the afternoon of February 1, 2016, Dorothy Mae Cowley, age 96, of Roosevelt, passed away of natural causes after a brief stay at the Uintah Basin Medical Center.
Dorothy was born in Charles Town, Jefferson County, West Virginia on February 25, 1919, to Leedom Jett Williamson and Emma Mae Stroup, the second of three children. Her childhood years were spent in West Virginia, and she was a member of the Methodist church.
By the late 1940s, she along with her spouse, moved to Utah searching for new opportunities, living in Salt Lake, Farmington, and eventually settling in Logan for nearly 50 years. Her last years were spent at Parkside Manor Assisted Living in Roosevelt.
After settling in Utah, she worked at Hill Air Force Base starting in 1951 as a mail carrier and chauffeur for military personnel, receiving several awards and commendations throughout her career, placing 1st and 3rd place in the Air Force Rodeo, a driving competition. She retired after 18 years due to a back injury. In 1955 she was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Logan 3rd Ward as a Relief Society teacher along with singing in the choir.
Those who knew her best would describe her as spirited. She was strong-willed and not afraid to share her thoughts on any number of things. She was quick-witted, often ready with a story to tell to anyone who was within listening distance. After the passing of her husband in 1973, she continued to be quite independent and feisty, often making new friends and taking trips to Wendover, Elko, and occasionally Las Vegas, where more often than not, would beat the odds against the one-armed bandit that lesser players could not match. She loved to cook and had a soft spot for instant coffee and Haagen-Dazs Coffee ice cream. She was loved by her children and grandkids, even accepting of several step-grandkids and foster grandkids, as families grew over time.
Dorothy is survived by her three daughters, Juanita "Pete" French, Carla (Chuck) Theisen, and Barbara (Ron) Price, along with 22 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Leedom and Emma, her brother LeLand Eugene "Bubby" Williamson and sister Helen Elizabeth Darr, her previous husbands, Lawrence Turner, Eldon Revelle Winfree, and Merlin Joseph Cowley, and her son Lawrence "Sonny" Eugene Turner.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hullinger Mortuary with a viewing from 10-10:45 a.m.
Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park.
