Loraine Matthews McKinnon, age 72, passed away August 11, 2015.
She was born in Salt Lake City August 7, 1943 to Lamar and Edna Matthews. While very young her parents divorced and her mother married Harold James Saxton
who was a wonderful father to Loraine and her older brother.
Loraine grew up on the Almy, Wyoming family ranch. She loved to ride on their Clydesdale pulled sleigh, though she often returned in tears due to frigid Wyoming temperatures. The Saxton family worked together and grew as three more children were born.
Loraine was very active in 4-H, learning to become an accomplished seamstress and cook. She made dresses each Christmas and Easter for her five daughters and was saved from making a sixth when her last child was a son. Loraine spent her life feeding not only her family, but anyone who walked through her door. Everyone loved her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls and she could create delicious meals out of anything.
While a teen, Loraine met Charles McKinnon at church and they soon became
inseparable. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple June 28, 1962. While newly married, the couple moved to a farm in Arcadia and started a family. They were hardworking and together Loraine and Charles improved the farm and eventually began processing meat. The tiny business soon began to thrive and developed into what is known
today as Chuck's Meat.
Loraine was active in the LDS church and served in many callings including
a service mission with Charles. She especially enjoyed teaching teens and working in the Relief Society.
Loraine had a cheerful disposition and hummed and whistled constantly. She
remained cheerful throughout a long ordeal with cancer and the death of her beloved husband in June of last year.
Loraine is survived by her sister, Rae (Jake) Williams, Evanston, WY; brothers, James (Terry) Saxton, Evanston, and Wesley Saxton, Riverton, WY; children, Ilene (Roger) Hall, Farmington; Claire (Brian) Mair, Heber City; Suzanne (James) Reeve, Danville, CA; Julianne (Ryan) Harrison, Arcadia; Charlea (Ryan) Mortensen, Melissa, TX, Steven (Chasity) McKinnon, Roosevelt; in-laws, Parley (Jan) McKinnon, Cedar City, Scott (Ginger) McKinnon, Duchesne; twenty grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
