Charlene Robertson Mickelson, our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, peacefully passed away in Kanab, Utah, at the age of 84, on December 20, 2022. She was happy to spend her last two weeks visiting with all of her children and most of her grandchildren.
Charlene was born on June 14, 1938, in Kanab, Utah, the first child of Frank Harmon and Ardell Young Robertson. She was a loving older sister to her brother, Harmon Frank (Boon) Robertson, and sister, Connie Jean Robertson. She was blessed to grow up living next door to her Grandpa and Grandma Young, and enjoyed spending time with her cousins when they came to visit.
Her family was living in California when she started attending school. She had many good memories of their time in California, but she was happy when they moved back to Kanab in 1945. Her school days in Kanab were fun for her because she always enjoyed learning and studying. She especially enjoyed her time at Kanab High School, helping put on dances and many other class projects and activities, and being in the school band, where she played the saxophone and piano. She graduated from Kanab High School in 1956, and then went to work for the telephone company as a switchboard operator. The following January she moved to Cedar City and attended CSU for two semesters, and then she attended Derryll’s College of Beauty Culture in Salt Lake City. After her graduation she worked in Salt Lake for a few months, and then she moved back to Kanab to work for Clyde Vance in her beauty shop.
In January 1960, Charlene started dating Merrill Mickelson. They soon became engaged and were married in the St. George Temple on May 6, 1960. They were the loving parents of six children, four girls and two boys. She was a woman of many talents, skills and hobbies. She faithfully served in various Church callings, sang in choirs, helped Dad at his auto parts store, became a gospel scholar, and enjoyed painting, sewing, crafts, and other handwork. Serving in the temple for many years was truly a highlight in her life. She had a firm and unwavering testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ, and that families are forever.
Her favorite role in life was being a grandmother. She loved supporting and cheering on her grandchildren in everything they did throughout their lives. Some favorite memories of Grandma’s fun traditions include: family reunions, 4th of July, frappe, making jewelry, playing her left/right game, and her gifts of afghans and quilts.
Charlene is survived by her eternal companion, Merrill C Mickelson; her six children: Myrna (Wes) Hoyt, Sylvia (Marc) Fox, Wayne (Marie), Jay (Jill), Valerie (Damon) Green, Merilee (Travis) Terry; 55 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren, with two on the way. She was preceded in death and welcomed home by her parents, brother and sister, and many other family members.
The family would like to extend appreciation and thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the St. George Hospital, Zion’s Way Hospice, the Kanab Skilled Nursing Facility, and Kane County Ambulance for their loving care the past two weeks.
