Carl Victor Blanchard, age 96, of Roosevelt, passed away January 17, 2017, at the Uintah Basin Sr. Villa.
He was born October 6, 1920, in Neola, to Ira Edmond and Julia Sophia Barnes Blanchard. He married Wilma Ruth Warren in Malad, ID on October 25, 1942, just four months before entering the US Army to fight in World War II. He was on the front lines in Bougainville, and spent most of his time stationed in Guadalcanal. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
Wilma and Carl’s marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1964.
Carl retired from Chevron Oil after 33 years, 23 of those living in Rangely, CO. He was instrumental in bringing television to Rangely and ran the projector in the only movie theater for several years. He was also the Mayor of Myton, Utah, from 1971-1977.
He loved people, animals, and being around his grandchildren – each one was his favorite. He was an avid baseball fan, and really enjoyed a good knock-down, drag out fight, which earned him the nickname of “Cactus.” Hobbies included golfing, fishing, and riding horses.
Carl was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings, but specifically with the Boy Scouts and as a worker in the Provo and Vernal Temples. He enjoyed watching and helping the small branch in Rangely grow into two large wards.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma, of Roosevelt; children, Warren C (Linda) Blanchard, Dutch John; Ed Kay (Deb) Blanchard, Roosevelt; Hal Ray (Sherry) Blanchard, Roosevelt; Kim Dwane (Mary) Blanchard, Montwell; 12 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Arlo (Louise) Blanchard, Layton; Irene (Ferron) Moon, Jensen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Tracy Ann Blanchard; and brothers, Ira, Wes, Hank, Ralph; and sisters, Verna Arnold, and Ruby.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 23, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Roosevelt 11th Ward LDS Chapel with a viewing that morning at the church from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
Burial will be in the Bluebell Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Altamont American Legion. Condolences may be shared at www.hullingermortuary.com
