Boyd Reed Lemon, age 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away 23 Jan 2015 in Roosevelt, Utah, telling his family, “I ran out of gas.”
Boyd was born 1 May 1929 in Roosevelt, Duchesne County, Utah, to John Reed Lemon and Arvilla Timothy. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1947. He was active in 4-H and in Future Farmers of America. Boyd served an LDS mission to the North Central States, after which he married Ola Tess Goodrich 20 June 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple.
The Korean War was in full swing, and Boyd joined the Air Force and served for twenty years. He worked as a Communications Operations and Equipment Maintenance Supervisor. During his career, Boyd and Tess lived many places throughout the US plus Bermuda and the Philippines. Boyd also served isolated tours of duty in Kwajalein Islands, Texas, Tennessee, and Tempelhof Air Base in West Berlin, Germany.
Boyd made friends throughout his travels and blessed the lives of many. For his contributions in the Philippines, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, and for his service on the staff of Strategic Air Command Headquarters, General G.W. Johnson gave him a letter of commendation. Boyd also received recognition for his management improvement suggestions over the years, some of which brought significant cost savings to the Air Force.
Both Boyd and Tess were active in the LDS church wherever they resided. Boyd served in various branch, ward, district and stake leadership positions as well as in various other callings.
Music was an important part of Boyd’s life. He and his family performed for various church and community functions. While they were in the Philippines, they entertained soldiers at the Clark Air Base Hospital. They also performed at a local Christmas Festival.
Boyd and the family returned to Utah after leaving the Air Force. He became a certified craftsman piano technician and a member of the Piano Technicians Guild. He attended the Utah State University Branch in Roosevelt and received his degree in Elementary Education, a part of the first class to graduate in the Basin without having to go to Logan. He taught at Myton Elementary School for fourteen years. He served as bishop of Roosevelt 6th Ward, as a high councilor in the Roosevelt Stake, and as a counselor in the Roosevelt Stake presidency. He also served as District Chairman of Scouting and as Chairman of a three-county Human Services Committee. In 1988 he was presented the Silver Beaver Award. Boyd and Tess served together as stake missionaries and as workers in the Vernal Temple.
