Afton Wright Powell, age 83, of Cedarview, passed away August 30, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born September 18,1939, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ernest Lynn Wright and Rachel Verda Bradford. She has 8 siblings, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. She is survived by her older sister, Verlyn Kimball and younger brother, Wayne Wright. She married her eternal companion Lars James Powell in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 30,1961. They have 6 children, Cindy Bryson (James), Lori Plant (John), Wendy Hood (Tad), Kenion Powell (Christy), Andy Powell (Kate) and Trudi Day (Morey). She has 26 grandchildren plus spouses, 38 great-grandchildren with 1 more on the way . Because two people fell in love we have 95 family members at our get-togethers with 2 more to join the family shortly. She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She talked about babysitting some of her nieces and nephews. She kept in touch with them and mourned when some of them left this earth.
She loved to travel, crochet, square dance, play the piano, and be with her family. She never failed to tell us that families are forever. She was gifted at making lifelong friends and she never failed to make sure they felt special.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She was a chorister and a pianist for many years. She played at numerous funerals. She was a primary worker, young women's leader, girls camp director, Relief Society counselor and Temple worker.
She was a fierce and passionate woman in almost every way and family is what gave her joy. She has always done things her way and that is how she left this world. She fought till she was tired of fighting. She has always talked about her 2 sisters, Geraldine and Velma who she never met. At the end of her life, she would tell us that she was looking forward to meeting them and getting to know them. I know she would include Kyla Ann, her great-granddaughter and meeting her mother-in-law. Now there is a great reunion in heaven.
